Date: June 27, 2025 Location: Chemiquipe Medical Campus, Kyengeza Parish, Wakiso District, Uganda Background Kyengeza Parish is facing significant environmental challenges due to unsustainable practices such as charcoal production, brick burning, and agricultural expansion, which have led to extensive deforestation. An estimated 95% of households depend on firewood for cooking, creating immense pressure on local natural resources. This unsustainable exploitation has contributed to environmental degradation, prolonged dry seasons, irregular weather patterns, and a notable loss of biodiversity. As we approach World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, under the theme of "Beat Plastic Pollution," we believe it is crucial to address the intertwined issues of plastic pollution and environmental degradation in our community. Objectives Awareness: Increase community awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution, its impact on the environment, and the importance of sustainable resource management. Engagement: Mobilize youth and local schools in environmental actions, particularly tree planting and waste recycling. Community Collaboration: Strengthen collaboration among community leaders, the youth, and residents to promote land restoration initiatives. Sustainable Practices: Demonstrate practical ways to compost, recycle, and practice sustainable farming techniques. Activities Environmental Awareness March: A lively march through Kyengeza Parish featuring placards addressing plastic pollution and its environmental impacts. Traditional performances to engage the community and raise awareness. School Competition: A creative competition encouraging schoolchildren to express their views on environmental protection through poems, songs, and art. Prizes for winning entries to motivate participation. Dialogue Session: A conversation among local leaders and youth focusing on land restoration strategies, sustainable practices, and community responsibilities towards the environment. Demonstration Sessions: Practical demonstrations led by young people showcasing composting techniques, recycling methods, sustainable farming practices, and the importance of tree planting. Launch of Sustainable Initiatives: Establish sustainable environmental clubs in schools, promoting ongoing community engagement and education. Create green spaces throughout the parish as a dedication to environmental well-being.
